CHO Plus Secures BARDA Funding to Bolster Biodefense Manufacturing Capabilities

CHO Plus, Inc. has been awarded up to $10.4 million in funding from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop high-productivity Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell lines for manufacturing filovirus monoclonal antibodies. This project, part of BARDA’s Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Preparedness Consortium (BioMaP-Consortium), underscores the growing emphasis on domestic biosecurity and preparedness for emerging infectious disease threats.

The collaboration between CHO Plus and Avid Bioservices to scale up monoclonal antibody production raises critical questions about the agility and responsiveness of the biopharmaceutical supply chain. While the initial focus is on filoviruses, the underlying technology and manufacturing infrastructure could be rapidly adapted to address other pandemic threats. This highlights a broader trend towards flexible and adaptable biomanufacturing platforms, capable of pivoting quickly to meet evolving public health needs.

The funding also reflects the increasing importance of public-private partnerships in driving innovation and preparedness in the biopharmaceutical sector. For smaller biotech companies like CHO Plus, these partnerships offer crucial access to non-dilutive funding and government expertise, enabling them to contribute to national biosecurity initiatives. For larger players like Avid Bioservices, the collaboration offers an opportunity to expand their capabilities and solidify their role in the critical biodefense supply chain.

This initiative comes at a time of heightened global awareness of pandemic preparedness. The recent COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains and underscored the need for robust domestic manufacturing capabilities for essential medicines and countermeasures. The investment in CHO Plus’s technology represents a proactive step toward strengthening these capabilities and mitigating future risks. Going forward, the success of this program will hinge not only on the technical advancements in cell line development and scale-up but also on the seamless integration of these innovations into a national biosecurity strategy. The true test will be the ability to rapidly deploy these capabilities in response to a future public health emergency.
