Nicox collects a €3 million milestone payment today as partner Kowa submits an NDA to the FDA for NCX 470 (bimatoprost grenod), and the more revealing number is what Nicox itself will not spend: zero. Every regulatory filing fee, every commercial build-out cost, every dollar of U.S. launch infrastructure sits on Kowa’s balance sheet, not Nicox’s. That arrangement is the actual story here, because it means a small French ophthalmology company listed on Euronext Growth Paris is now tracking a mid-2027 U.S. approval without carrying the capital burden that would typically come with it.

The NDA rests on two Phase 3 trials, Mont Blanc and Denali. Both demonstrated non-inferiority to latanoprost, with NCX 470 producing IOP reductions from baseline of 8.0 to 9.7 mmHg in Mont Blanc and 7.9 to 10.0 mmHg in Denali, both numerically ahead of the latanoprost comparator arm. The molecule is engineered to release both bimatoprost and nitric oxide into the eye, hitting uveoscleral outflow through the prostaglandin pathway and trabecular meshwork outflow through the NO pathway simultaneously. That dual mechanism is the commercial pitch in a market where prostaglandin analogs like latanoprost have been entrenched since 1996 and physicians need a concrete differentiator to switch prescribing habits.

The partnership structure Nicox has assembled is worth examining as a model. Kowa covers the U.S. and all territories outside China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, where Ocumension holds rights and is expected to file in China shortly after this U.S. submission. Phase 3 trials for the Japanese market started in summer 2025, also on Kowa’s dime. Nicox sits at the center collecting milestones and royalties, with a further milestone due upon approval. It is a capital-light royalty position across several major markets, and the €3 million landing today is only the second payment in what is designed to be a multi-trigger structure.

The FDA’s standard 12-month review clock points to a mid-2027 decision. Watch the Complete Response Letter rate for prostaglandin-class NDAs in the current FDA review environment: if the agency accelerates or flags manufacturing questions, the commercial launch window Kowa has penciled in for late 2027 shifts accordingly, and so does the timing of Nicox’s next milestone trigger.
